Mobile numbers in India will reportedly start supporting 13-digit length starting July 1st. As per telecom officials, the Department of Telecom (DoT) has issued a directive to all the telecom operators in India stating the same. They have been ordered to issue 13-digit numbers for all their customers using M2M (Machine-to-Machine). This directive was issued on January 8th, 2018 and most telecom operators have already began working on it to ensure that they are ready by July 1st.
If you are worried about having to remember a 13 digit number, relax. M2M refers to IOT (Internet of Things). Think about your smart appliances like cars or industrial products that have SIM card in them for network connection. Those would be updated to have a 13 digit number. With billions of smart devices expected to pop up across the globe, it makes sense to move them to a longer number. So in short, consumer mobile numbers are not changing.
All existing M2M 10-digit numbers used for such purposes will be ported to 13-digit numbers starting from October 1, 2018 and will be concluded till December 31, 2018. Talking about this development, one of the officials from BSNL said, “It is decided that 13-digit M2M (Machine-to-machine) numbering plan will be implemented from July 1, 2018. From this date onwards, all new M2M mobile connections will be allocated 13-digit numbers only… Migration of existing 10-digit M2M numbers will start latest by 1 October 2018 and shall be completed by 31 December 2018.”
